As 2019 comes to a close, our schedules are cluttered with to-do’s and many of us are craving more simple, functional planner spreads. But that doesn’t mean we have to forget our love for stickers, washi and all things colorful.
A simple planning style is more about the approach than the aesthetic. Classic black and white layouts and inserts are definitely gorgeous and super functional but there are some other things you can incorporate into your planning to embrace simplicity beyond the surface.
Here are some ideas and inspiration from our community:
Take it one day at a time
In busy seasons, a full monthly or weekly spread can seem overwhelming. When this happens, reach for a daily planner or daily insert to help you get things done. It is so helpful to focus on what is important for that day and very satisfying to feel like you have made progress when the day is done.

Give yourself some grace
If you are not currently feeling the love for decorating or “before the pen” style of planning, give yourself some grace. It is ok to have those weeks in your planner that are just good old pen and paper. You can also try a simple color coding system for an extra boost of productivity.

Keep everything in its place
A cluttered planner can feel like a cluttered mind. Use tools like tabs, dividers and folders to create sections in your planner and separate areas of your life (schedule, budget, work, etc.). This will help tame the paper chaos and keep you focused. Set up a designated “inbox” area to consolidate a list of things that are not time specific.

Add a little bujo to your planning
Nothing says simple better than a dot grid. Designing your own spreads on dot grid is very functional and will help pair down your layouts plus enhance your creativity. Dot grids allow for clean lines and are also great for list making.
