She is a creative BuJo devotee and makes an amazing pen pal…..
Shaniece from @thesleeplessplanner
Shaniece began her journey with bullet journaling just four years ago. What started as a way to clear her mind and purge all the things onto paper has grown into a real passion. With much practice and improved lettering skills, her spreads have evolved into functional works of art. Her bullet journal and art provide inspiration to women around the world through her “pen pal” exchange each year. She has been featured in the Chicago Tribune and these days spends her time expanding her craft and creativity in new ways.

Have you ever heard the saying “words have power”? If so, then you know the value of words and how much of an impact they can have in our everyday life. We use words to communicate and express a variety of feelings and emotions, sometimes without even putting any thought behind them. But just imagine the impact our words can have with real focus, intention and commitment.
This is where the idea of One Little Word comes in. An idea started by Ali Edwards in 2006, that centers on choosing one word to focus on for the new year. Your word can be anything you want, which makes it both fun and challenging. It should be a word that truly speaks to you in the particular season you are in and where you want to go. A word that will guide you, hold you accountable and help you when faced with decisions. Whatever your word ends up being, it will serve you best if it becomes a part of your everyday life.
With the end of the year just around the corner, there is a buzz about choosing a word of the year. Choosing a word can come easy for some but not for all. Here are some tips to help you work through the process of selecting your own word for 2020:
Reflect and project
Spend a bit of time thinking about what is really important to you. Be honest with yourself about where you are now and what you want to work on or improve upon in the new year. Your word should reflect these goals. Think about where you ultimately want to be and what it will take to get you there. It is not the same for everyone so you will need to take a deep look inward to find the answers and figure out what you want to bring into your life.
Do a brain dump
Grab a pen and paper and begin writing down words that speak to you at this moment. What is inspiring you, challenging you and bringing you joy. This will help ease the anxiety and get your mind flowing. Remember, your word is not tied to a specific goal but rather an overarching momentum that pushes you towards achieving them.
Consider the possibilities
After you have a list of potential words, maybe you want to circle or focus in on a couple that could be your word of the year. Take some time to think about what each of these words could look like in your life. It could take a few moments or a few days. You will most likely decide which of the words reflects where you are headed. It may have you feeling excited, determined or even scared. But ultimately you now know the end result you are after.
Welcome your word
Congratulations – you now have a word! You can share it with friends or keep it to yourself but either way the most important thing is to make it a part of your life. So how do you do that? Think about it daily, hang it up somewhere visible, write it in your planner and let it become part of your story. Each year Ali Edwards offers a year long One Little Word workshop to help prompt you each month with creative ideas and ways to incorporate your word into your life. This is an amazing way to have your word truly be present and have a purpose.
Have you given some thought about your word for 2020? Remember a year sounds like a long time but twelve months will pass by in a blink of an eye.
With only a few weeks left in the year, now is the time to “move in” to your new planner and do some prep work. Whether you’ve been using a particular planner for years, trying a new layout/system or adding a new planner to your lineup, spending some time getting set up now will pay off all year long.
While everyone has their own style – you do you – laying a strong foundation can really help you get off that roller coaster of overwhelm and focus on what matters. We have put together some helpful tips to get your planner ready for the year ahead.
Start with the basics
◾️Fill in all set dates such as birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, days off, school schedules and work related events/travel to make sure nothing gets missed.
◾️Write down all upcoming commitments that have scheduled times and dates so you are not searching through papers and emails looking for information.
◾️Plan for vacation time to guarantee you will be rested and recharged.
◾️Set up routines – morning, evening, wellness and self care – to make your days less hectic and more intentional.
Beyond the basics
◾️Write a bucket list (either for the year or each season) and schedule those things in your planner. Make sure to include things that fill your cup along the way.
◾️Set goals (smart, heart or whatever kind works) and identify what you want to achieve in the new year. Then plan out action items in your planner that work towards achieving them. Celebrate your milestones with rewards and make adjustments when necessary.
◾️Create new habits or break bad ones with tracking systems that record your progress and help you stay motivated and accountable.
◾️Carve out time for what matters most. Look for white spaces or pockets of time in your schedule where you can be present in the things that are important to you. Whether you are spending time with a loved one, enjoying a hobby or hustling a side project, find dedicated time without distractions to make those things happen.
Let’s go 2020 – we got this!
