Behind The Shop – Sugary Gal Shop

Behind The Shop is an ongoing series that features our talented and devoted sho owner community. Each time, we talk one-on-one with a shop owner/s to hear first hand what shop life is all about. Whether it’s a new shop that just came onto the scene or a popular community favorite – we want to share more about their journeys and stories with you.

Sugary Gal Shop

In 2015, Diana Velazquez left her full time job, due to personal reasons, but knew she needed something else that would allow her to be creative and bring herself joy. After purchasing her first ever planner (Erin Condren), she discovered the planner community and the world of decorative planning.  Diana was immediately hooked and decided to embark on the journey of designing, creating and selling planner stickers. She hit the ground running, did tons of research and taught herself all about sticker making. She opened her shop on Etsy and Sugary Gal Shop was born.

Over the years, Sugary Gal Shop has grown and evolved along with the planner community offering a variety of stickers and products. The signature Lady D character is a popular favorite among shop fans. Her recent collaborations with Paper House have allowed her to create even more products and have her designs for sale in Michaels Stores. Diana has made life long friends throughout the community and has started her own annual planner conference in New York – SGS New York Planner Conference.

We had a chance to talk one-on-one with Diana all about her behind the shop life and some sneaks about the upcoming virtual SGS New York Planner Conference.  Take a listen to our chat:

THE SHOP

Sugary Gal Shop has hundreds of stickers including weekly kits, functionals, popular phrases, icons and digital products. Lady D, originally based on a television character, has evolved over the years into a real glam girl that can do all the things. Diana designs her to be inclusive and represent all women with a variety of skin tones and hair colors. She is a best seller and one of the iconic characters in the planner community. The shop offers stickers and kits (not only Lady D) specially designed to fit a variety of planner sizes with themes ranging from decorative to seasonal to pop culture and more.

THE COLLABORATION with Paper House

In 2018, Diana was asked to do her first collaboration with Paper House and created a full Lady D sticker book (30 pages) that is available on their website. One year later, Paper House asked Diana to collaborate on a very special collection featuring ten amazing artists from the planner community, called This Is Us. The collection was created with the mission of embracing uniqueness, celebrating diversity and respect for others. It was designed to inspire us all to support each other in our everyday lives and was sold in retail stores through a partnership with Michaels Stores.  This summer, Diana will be collaborating with Paper House again on a project that is just wrapping up. Stay tuned!

The conference will take place via Zoom on September 11, 2021. There will be a list of speakers, workshops, sponsors, games, prizes, shopping and SWAG! Diana wanted to make sure attendees have the same great experience online as they get in person. Attendees will also be able to interact with speakers and break out into rooms to chat and shop planner goodies. They will also be receiving a special swag box in advance at home. There is a limited number of tickets available for the event. Tickets go on sale Saturday, May 29th at 2:00 pm EST.

ANSWER: Dani @theplannerteawithdani

Dani discovered the planner community through YouTube and Instagram back in 2015 after having her first child. She purchased her first Erin Condren planner and fell in love with planning and decorating it.  Being from New York, Dani was able to find a local planner group (NYC Planner Addicts) and attend her first planner event.  Over the years, she has made lifelong friends and is now a moderator of the NYC Planner Addicts Facebook group. Her planning style has evolved, but she really found her groove when she discovered The Happy Planner. Using a discbound system allows her to get creative and customize her planner to work for her.  More recently, she has embraced bullet journaling and memory keeping in her Archer & Olive books.  She uses all kinds of stickers, highlighters and Sharpie S Gel pens to decorate her spreads.  Dani loves planning because it helps her stay on task, document memories and inspire others to be creative and start planning.

The Academic Collection is available in Floral, Marble and Quote in a weekly and daily option. Both planners feature interior layouts that are intentionally designed with a focus on task management, goal achievement, healthy living and gratitude. Each planner also has a quarterly goal check-in page as well as monthly check-ins that include habit tracking, goal planning and lifestyle prompts.

The weekly layout is horizontal with plenty of space to track timed appointments and tasks plus self care and gratitude prompts as well as a weekly task list including a top three. The weekly planner also has a tabbed “Extras” section which includes lined notes pages, meal planning pages, travel planning pages and monthly budget worksheets. The daily layout offers a full page per day (weekends share) with sections for writing lists, journaling and more, plus space for hourly timed appointments and prompts for self care, gratitude and movement each day. The daily planner also includes a “peek at the week” for at-a-glance future planning. The “Extras” tab includes lined notes pages.

New for this launch are the soft and flexible covers with an interior front pocket and rounded corners with an elastic band closure plus two new colorful sticker sheets included. All the planners have wire-o binding with high quality paper (120 gsm weekly and 100 gsm daily), laminated tabs and rich ink colors. Planner’s Guide: The Weekly – Daily Dilemma

Planner’s Guide: The Weekly – Daily Dilemma

If you’ve added daily planning to your routine recently (or want to try it), you may encounter the “weekly-daily dilemma”. Specifically, we are referring to the #plannerproblem that seems to be creeping up around the community. You love the functionality of using a daily layout but have remorse for letting go of your beloved weekly overview. Or you decide to keep both a weekly and daily layout, but feel as if you are constantly rewriting your tasks and appointments over and over again. Don’t take this the wrong way, daily planning is amazing and can even boost productivity. But considering all planners also come with a monthly spread too, it can get a bit overwhelming.

In theory, it seems like ultimate planner peace. The monthly layouts are for high level planning, weekly layouts for “at-a-glance” upcoming appointments and daily layouts for granular tasks. However, figuring out the best system that works for you can be a bit tricky. So what’s a planner to do?

We have a few suggestions to help with the struggle of wanting/needing to use all the layouts without loosing your mind in the process.

➡️ Consider using an “all-in-one planner” because it is specifically designed for all the layouts to flow in a sequence that will work for your optimal productivity and planning. Rather than “franken-planning” which may cause you to take out extra pages and spreads that are not necessary and compromising the flow and design which could leave you feeling frustrated.

➡️ Commit to a system (either weekly or daily) and make it work for you. Having double planners will for sure lead to double the writing and in most cases double the decorating and stickers as well. It’s fine to have multiple planners if there are specific intentions and purposes for each (ie. wellness, memory, faith) but having several planners to keep track of your schedule and tasks will ultimately become overwhelming and things can start to fall through the cracks.

➡️ Try to be intentional with “what goes where” like using your monthly to track your budget or dashboard pages for goals or brain dumps. Get creative and make the pages work for you. This will help minimize the duplication of writing things multiple times and increase the function of whatever planner you are using.

➡️ Designate a “catch all” layout where everything goes and then refer back to it when planning in the other layouts when the time gets closer. Choose the layout that you tend to gravitate towards most and works best with your brain/thinking. This will make planning less stressful and you won’t be flipping through pages wondering where you wrote something down.

➡️ Create a routine or system for migrating information between planners and layouts so nothing gets lost. Whether you are using one planner with multiple layouts or multiple planners, having a routine in place that is easy to maintain will make sure your planner is always up to date and keep you coming back and excited to use it.

Here is some inspiration from the community on using multiple layouts, planners and tracking all the things:

It’s totally ok and fun to try out new planners and layouts but don’t feel pressured by what other people are doing. Stick with what brings you joy and helps keep you organized.  Happy planning!
