Planner’s Guide – Setting Your Planner Up For Success

Planner’s Guide – Setting Your Planner Up For Success

It’s planner move-in season! If you are an academic planner user (July – June), now is the time to set up your planner for success. The more you put in now, the more you will get out of it later. Just like any other tool, a planner will not work for you if you don’t take the time to learn and set it up for your specific needs and goals. So many people in the community have been struggling with their systems and jumping from planner to planner because they feel it has stopped working for them. This can not only lead to feelings of overwhelm and frustration but lack of productivity as well.

Let’s face it, time flies and life gets hectic. The best way to keep your planner working for you in the long term is to prep it now before it starts. So if your planner starts in July, set aside time in June to get it all ready. Same is true for January start, you want to make time in November or December before the business of the holidays. This way you are ready to hit the ground running and any upcoming things will already be in place.

How to set your planner up for success

Even with the dozens of customization options that are available now, there is still no one size fits all planner. So here are some tips to help you get your planner set up and have some fun doing it:

➡️ Brain Dump – Your planner should be a “catch all” place for what is happening in your life.  Take a moment to brain dump month by month all the key dates that you know are upcoming for the year. Be sure to include birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, vacations, important events, appointments, bills and more. The monthly spreads are a great place to start with all of this. If you are a decorative planner and are not ready to put pen to paper yet, stick a post it note on each month so when the time comes you are prepared to plan. You can also create a master document with all this information to keep handy when planning and decorating.

➡️ Have a plan for your planner – That sounds silly, right?  Well let’s explain. When starting a new planner you need to define its purpose and set it up accordingly. If you are a multiple planner user, then you need to figure out what you want this planner to do for you e.g. track your budget or your fitness, etc.  If you us only one planner for all the things, then you need to designate specific areas in the planner that will be dedicated for each aspect of your life. This way, your are going in with a game plan and are less likely to give up on it in a couple of months when things get busy. You will always know your go to spots for writing things down and exactly where to find them later.

➡️ Grab all the essentials – Be sure you have all your favorite supplies handy. Find a bin, tote or pouch and fill it will your basic tools, favorite pens, highlighters, stickers, post it notes or any other essentials you love to use in your planner.

➡️ Get cozy – Set the mood for planning and make it a relaxing experience that will motivate you and bring you joy. Find a comfortable place, maybe light a candle, listen to an uplifting podcast, binge watch a favorite show or YouTube creator. Then, get to work!

➡️ Decorate ahead of time – We all love decorating our planners but truth be told, it does take time that we don’t always have. So if you are a decorative planner or want to be, or if you love using kits, try to plan spreads out in advance so you have your supplies ahead of time to make sure your weeks are ready.  We all know there are times we don’t have the right kit on hand so we either don’t use our planner or the week becomes a total fail. Staying on top of releases from your favorite brands and shops will help.

➡️ Make it social – Planner move-in in time is exciting and fun. Schedule a little meet up with friends (in person or virtually) and dig into getting your planners prepped for the new year. It’s a great way to share ideas, tips, and supplies #plannerfriendsmakethebestfriends

The most imporatant thing is to do what works for you. It’s ok to try out different planners but always keep one constant place so nothing falls through the cracks. Hope this helps and brings joy into planning for you!

New Planners From She Plans – Interview with Ashley Staum

New Planners From She Plans – Interview with Ashley Staum

Since first opening an Etsy shop in 2013, She Plans founder Ashley Staum, has created many different types of planners from coils to sewn books and from inserts to printables. Now for the new 2021-2022 collection, Ashley is launching into new territory with the creation of a disc bound daily planning system that is half letter size. It her way of offering more customization and also integrating the printable portion of her shop.

Ashley is a total planner girl at heart and definitely enjoys planning on paper. She began designing her first planners in Excel back in college when she couldn’t find what she was looking for in the stores. Her first planners, mostly printables, became very popular with family and friends. So after getting married and having her four children, she decided to take her graphic design to the next level and created the She Plans brand. Over the years, the planners have evolved but have remained true to the purpose of keeping your weeks simple and your days intentional.

We talked one-on-one with Ashley about the new collection and her purpose for designing planners that help you be more intentional and less overwhelmed.  Take a listen to our chat below:

THE PLANNER

The new disc bound planner features a daily layout with a full page for each day (including Saturdays & Sundays) as well as weekly overviews, monthly spreads and goal setting throughout.  The planner is half letter size and can be purchased as a complete set with covers and tabs or individually as just the inserts. It is dated July 2021 – June 2022 and printed on #70 paper. There are two cover options, Navy Floral and Camel Floral with a protective frosted poly cover overlay. There is also an add-on option for (50) additional notes pages. Plus, all of the pieces can also be purchased unpunched so you can ring punch or coil yourself.

GOAL SETTING

The planner includes a very intentional goal setting system. The upfront introduction allows for vision planning and brainstorming goals which are then broken down and woven throughout the planner pages. The system centers on “focus” goals which you set every six months. At the beginning of the planner, there are worksheets to help you get started, in the middle of the planner there is a refresh area which helps you refocus for the rest of the year. Plus there are worksheet dispersed into each quarter and month to keep you on track. It is designed so you don’t just set it and forget it but rather it guides you from vision to actually taking action.

Behind The Shop – Sugary Gal Shop

Behind The Shop – Sugary Gal Shop

Behind The Shop is an ongoing series that features our talented and devoted sho owner community. Each time, we talk one-on-one with a shop owner/s to hear first hand what shop life is all about. Whether it’s a new shop that just came onto the scene or a popular community favorite – we want to share more about their journeys and stories with you.

Sugary Gal Shop

In 2015, Diana Velazquez left her full time job, due to personal reasons, but knew she needed something else that would allow her to be creative and bring herself joy. After purchasing her first ever planner (Erin Condren), she discovered the planner community and the world of decorative planning.  Diana was immediately hooked and decided to embark on the journey of designing, creating and selling planner stickers. She hit the ground running, did tons of research and taught herself all about sticker making. She opened her shop on Etsy and Sugary Gal Shop was born.

Over the years, Sugary Gal Shop has grown and evolved along with the planner community offering a variety of stickers and products. The signature Lady D character is a popular favorite among shop fans. Her recent collaborations with Paper House have allowed her to create even more products and have her designs for sale in Michaels Stores. Diana has made life long friends throughout the community and has started her own annual planner conference in New York – SGS New York Planner Conference.

We had a chance to talk one-on-one with Diana all about her behind the shop life and some sneaks about the upcoming virtual SGS New York Planner Conference.  Take a listen to our chat:

THE SHOP

Sugary Gal Shop has hundreds of stickers including weekly kits, functionals, popular phrases, icons and digital products. Lady D, originally based on a television character, has evolved over the years into a real glam girl that can do all the things. Diana designs her to be inclusive and represent all women with a variety of skin tones and hair colors. She is a best seller and one of the iconic characters in the planner community. The shop offers stickers and kits (not only Lady D) specially designed to fit a variety of planner sizes with themes ranging from decorative to seasonal to pop culture and more.

THE COLLABORATION with Paper House

In 2018, Diana was asked to do her first collaboration with Paper House and created a full Lady D sticker book (30 pages) that is available on their website. One year later, Paper House asked Diana to collaborate on a very special collection featuring ten amazing artists from the planner community, called This Is Us. The collection was created with the mission of embracing uniqueness, celebrating diversity and respect for others. It was designed to inspire us all to support each other in our everyday lives and was sold in retail stores through a partnership with Michaels Stores.  This summer, Diana will be collaborating with Paper House again on a project that is just wrapping up. Stay tuned!
