Planner’s Guide - Avoiding Planner Burnout

It’s the start of a new year and we are all filled with that fresh start and new goals energy. It’s always an exciting time, especially when setting up your ideal planner stack. However, the struggle is real when it comes to deciding which planners should be in your line up. At one time or another, we have all been faced with that too familiar pile of planners and felt overwhelmed or unsure with just how to make them all work. If that’s the case, it’s time to assess your planner stack to avoid hitting planner burnout.

Assessing your planner stack means stepping back and taking an honest, realistic look at a few key things that will help you move forward with a system you are happy with and will work better for you in the long run.  Getting caught up in the trap of “over-committing” to too many planners - maybe due to FOMO or social media influence - is just not sustainable and can lead to planner burnout.

Here are a few to consider that will help you make more intentional decisions:

  • How much time you have to dedicate to planning

  • Set a purpose for each planner/s in your lineup - try to avoid repetition when possible

  • Select planners that work for your season of life and current lifestyle

  • Choose a layout that works for the way your brain works, how you process information and your overall planning style - don’t be influenced by social media but be inspired

  • Do others need to have access to your schedule and will you be incorporating digital tools into your planning process

  • Are you strictly functional or do you want a creative side to your planner

  • Set aside a planner/s that may not be currently working for you, it can always be picked up again

  • Purchase undated planners (if that works for you) that can be added in or taken out of your line up at anytime

Feeling planner burnout can happen at any point throughout your planner journey. Making the time to assess your planner line up is a helpful practice that can be done at any time of year.  It is a great way to refresh your perspective and breathe new life into your planning. Seasons of life change and your planning style and system should be flexible and evolve with you.
